The Chatham County WWII Memorial connects Savannah’s present with one of the defining chapters in American history.
Its presence on River Street offers residents and visitors a place to pause, reflect, and honor the men and women whose service
protected the freedoms we live with today.

The Veterans Council of Chatham County is committed to keeping that memory visible –
not only for those who lived through the war, but also for the children, grandchildren, and future generations who deserve

The Savannah World War II Monument features over 2,200 engraved walking bricks around its base, each inscribed with the name of a veteran, donor, or supporter. [1, 2, 3]
Monument and Brick Details
  • Location: On historic River Street at the Whitaker Street ramp (100 West River Street, Savannah, GA), right in front of the Bohemian Hotel. [1]
  • Design: Designed by architect Eric Meyerhoff, the 20-foot monument is titled “A World Apart” and features a copper-and-steel split globe representing the Eastern and Western theaters of the war. [1, 2]
  • The Bricks: The surrounding walkways contain thousands of 5-pound engraved bricks that were purchased to help fund the monument. [1, 2]
